CAHO World Patient Safety Day 2021

A virtual event to observe World Patient Safety Day was organized on 17-Sep-2020. Highlights were the Keynote addresses by Dr Shantha Kumari, President Federation of Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), and by Dr Ranjan Pejavar, President National Neonatology Forum (NNF).

A collaboration between CAHO and the All India Coordination Committee of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (AICC RCOG) was launched to implement the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist in India. Dr Bhaskar Pal, Chairperson, AICC RCOG & Dr Piyush Gupta, President, Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) spoke about the significance of this collaboration.

In this context, a panel discussion was held regarding Country experiences of Implementing the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist moderated by Dr Katherine Semrau, Director, Better Birth Programme, Ariadne Labs, Boston, USA. The panelists included Dr Rose Molina(USA), Dr Hema Divakar (Bangalore, India), Dr Anuradha Pichumani, (Tamilnadu, India), Dr Vikram Datta (New Delhi, India), Ms Farah Diba (Indonesia), Dr Azza Farouk Noredinn (Sudan) and Dr Malitha Patabendige (Sri Lanka).

A live E-Quiz Competition was also conducted on the WPSD 2021 theme - "Safe maternal and newborn care". Dr. Pramod Paharia (Jr. Consultant Pediatrics & Quality Coordinator, Nazareth Hospital Shillong), Baishali Biswas Dubey (Infection control & Quality control Nursing Incharge, Bhagirathi Neotia Woman & Child Care Center, Kolkata) and Dr. Shweta Prabhakar (Head Quality & Patient Safety, Fortis Hospital Mohali) emerged as the Winner, First and Second Runner up respectively.

Thematic competitions were held by the Zonal Chairpersons of CAHO in their respective geographies and winners were recognised.

Guest of Honour Dr V.P.Paily (Rajagiri Hospital, Kochi, India) elaborated on his work on Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths in India and the improvements it brought about to Patient Safety.

The programme was attended by over a 700 participants from across many countries.
